Three Simple Ways to Support You

Photographing and Storing Memorable Sports Photos and Videos

How do you get the best sports photos and videos of your favorite team or your child playing?

The 2024 Olympics in Paris gets underway soon. Good for you if you’re traveling to Europe to see the world’s greatest athletes in action, but there’s always plenty happening in the sports-crazed USA.

Football season is only weeks away, and the playoff picture in Major League Baseball is shaping up.

Are you attending any of the football training camps or late-season baseball games?

Soccer and volleyball will kick off for all ages with basketball and hockey just a few months away.

Cheerleaders get busier than ever and there are plenty of competitions for the martial arts and competitive dancing.

There’s lots of sports to keep us occupied but there are two pressing questions to answer.

  1. How do you get the best sports photos or videos possible?
  2. And how do you store your photos and videos for future generations?

Let’s look at tips for those of us who are amateur photographers. And learn to permanently store your sports photos to enjoy for decades to come.

Take your best shot

Keep your expectations real. Don’t expect your shots to make the cover of Sports Illustrated or your local paper, but your photos and videos will have lots of meaning for your kids, grandkids, and their children.

Try these pointers, made especially for smartphone users.

  1. Know key moments and important places.

Right before the action begins is nice because the players are in a ready-to-go stance so you get a sense of action. In football, a key moment is when teams line up for kickoffs or plays from the line of scrimmage.

  • Aim for the eyes when possible.

In soccer, look for your player coming close to the touchline. Football is nearly impossible to get the eyes, especially if you’re seated higher up in bleachers.

  • Capture the entire field or get a close-up of your player during a time on the sidelines with the action in the background. The viewer’s imagination will fill in the rest.
  • Get the right setting for lighting and your shutter speed. Shutter speed determines how long the shutter will remain open and how bright the picture will be.
  • Stay steady and take a breath. A slight hand motion can ruin your picture.
  • Make sure your aspect ratio is 4:3.

This lets you take a wide-angle stadium photograph to capture the crowd and the game or catch as many images as possible during the action.

  • Burst mode allows you to constantly capture images as long as your finger is on the shutter. You won’t have to worry about timing.
