Giving Family Research as a Gift

Think through all the gifts you can give from new clothes and sports equipment to vacations and food baskets. How many gifts that you give will be enjoyed and have meaning into 2024?

Clothes make you feel good, but they get tattered. Food baskets eventually get eaten and forgotten.

Here’s a gift idea you can give that will last for years, decades, and even centuries: the gift of researching your family’s history.

I’ve been a photo coach for almost 30 years and have helped families preserve and safeguard their stories.

Turn your family’s photos and videos into keepsakes that will teach future generations about your family’s history.

Read on to see why that’s so important and how you can give that gift so it lasts.

At the end of this post, you’ll see how to take a virtual tour with me online and take an in-depth look at the resource I use, FOREVER®.

Why Research Your Family

In past decades, families had mementos like fine china and furniture passed along from one generation to another as keepsakes. But times have changed and younger families aren’t inheriting physical mementos and passing them along.

However, photos, videos, and other files continue to have meaning for years to come.

What are your favorite memories and stories from parents and grandparents?

Pass them along with a platform called FOREVER®, a service I use personally and with my clients.

Why Use FOREVER® with Family Research

FOREVER® is an all-in-one memory-keeping platform that’s designed to last for a user’s lifetime, plus into the next century and beyond—guaranteed.

You have the option of owning your account which means you won’t have the Terms of Service changed on you and your files won’t be used for data mining or other marketing and advertising purposes.

Here’s why it’s such an effective tool for your family research.

Digitization

Digitize family photos from decades ago, like this photo of my grandmother when she was 4 years old. This photo was taken over a hundred years ago and will be accessible for my grandchildren when they’re older and for their grandchildren.

FOREVER® has a state-of-the-art digitization facility near Green Bay, Wisconsin where fragile photos and Super 8 home movies can be safely digitized and uploaded to your FOREVER® account.

My colleague, Nancy Launi, says she had her mother’s wedding video from 1953 digitized. The file was fragile but the FOREVER® team took great care and now has it digitized and preserved. Link to Nancy’s story at the end.

What can you have digitized? Here’s a partial list:

  • Printed photos
  • VHS tapes and Super 8 home movies
  • Slide shows
  • Handwritten letters
  • Important documents

Storage and Story Telling

In the 1950s and 1960s, families took Super 8 home movies and slide shows to capture their stories.

Remember how many of us used camcorders in the late 1990s and early 2000s to take videos?

Now, we mostly use our phones to snap photos and record videos.

FOREVER® lets you store files from different eras in one secure place. Guaranteed.

It’s a powerful memory-keeping system and is also a wonderful story-telling system.

In the area to the right is space to identify the photo, who’s in the photo, and space to write either a brief or long description. You can do this with all your files. In 60 or 70 years from now when a future relative is researching the family line and sees this picture, then they’ll immediately know who’s in it and why it’s important.

Sharing Your Digitized Memories

Karen Goldberg chronicled her trip to Paris and can quickly find her memories.

You have complete control of who sees your photos, videos, and other files. Your files are stored in your Library and you can organize them by setting up Albums to have specific collections of photos like Vacations, Holidays, Kids, and Family Tree.

Each album has its own settings so you can control who sees it just like my friend Karen Goldberg did. Link to Karen’s story here and below.

A client of mine is a small business owner and she has one album set specifically for her marketing team to use and they can’t access any of her other albums.

You might have an album that you want to share with friends and another you want to share with your children or parents.

FOREVER® also has collaborative albums that you can use with sports teams and church groups.

I’ll gladly share more during our tour, and you’ll see how to create albums.

Gifting Family Research

FOREVER® is unique. The company offers the services of professional family researchers who can consult to help you lay out a plan to start or help you find hard-to-locate records or get past other obstacles due to language barriers from other countries.

“A FOREVER Family Research gift can fill in missing generations, add detail to your family’s stories, or break through brick walls of previous personal genealogy research,” as noted in this FOREVER® blog post.

More gift ideas

Photo books and other gift ideas like wall art are wonderful during the holidays and all year long for birthdays and “thinking about you” gifts.

Use your digital photos to create attractive photo books. You can create theme books containing images of your family research or give based on a theme like Memorable Vacations.
