If you’re enjoying researching your family’s history, you need a way to safeguard all the fun facts and stories you’re uncovering. You need a system to:

  • Store new family stories
  • Journal what your ancestors achieved and the difficulties they overcame
  • Pass along fun stories to your children and grandchildren—and their children

Developing your family tree can be a fun project for your parents, kids, and cousins and be a way to leave a legacy for future generations.

A friend of mine and photo coaching colleague, Rori Grosse, traced her family’s line back a few centuries and I asked her to share about her findings.

Scroll to the end of this post to contact Rori and ask her about how she safeguards her family photos.

Here are tips on developing a system to research your family’s history and the best way to preserve your findings.

You Need a Platform to Organize and Preserve Your Findings

Rori and I use FOREVER® to store and organize the files that tell our family’s story.

FOREVER® lets you bring all of your most meaningful memories from the past, the present, and the future into one place that’s safe and secure. Guaranteed.

You can easily digitize old files you find like photos, Super 8 home movies, slide shows, old letters, and family recipes.

Store the files in a central location called your Library and then organize them into digital Albums and Nested Albums.

Here’s a photo of one of Rori’s albums highlighting her family’s history.

How FOREVER® is Different than Social Media and other Memory Storage Companies

Here are 4 reasons to use FOREVER® instead of social media platforms or other companies:

  1. Your files aren’t used for advertising or marketing purposes so you don’t have to worry about data mining. Your content is yours and your privacy is respected.
  2. You have the option to own your account, just like Rori and I do. This becomes your digital home that belongs to you, so the Terms of Service won’t suddenly be changed and you won’t be locked out of your account.
  3. Permanent storage. FOREVER® is designed to last for a lifetime, plus well into the next century and beyond. Since it’s cloud-based, this means it’s easy to share links with children and grandchildren.

Rori explained why this is big.

“External hard drives and flash drives are only designed to last from a few years to several years. Hard drives and USB drives can easily get damaged and become unusable.”

Small, storage devices are also easy to misplace or lose and it’s tough passing your photos along from one generation to another.

“Someone I know has their files stored in a safe deposit box in their bank,” she says.

FOREVER® is different.

Newspaper clippings, old photos, and documents like marriage certificates can be digitized and stored with plenty of space for brief or lengthy written descriptions. That way, someone in the future who comes across the material will be able to easily know the significance of what they’re reading and seeing.

  1. You’re not just on your own in your family research.

Rori has used FOREVER®’s professional researchers who can locate hard-to-find records and help overcome obstacles that exist due to language barriers if your ancestors immigrated from other countries.

She’s made fun and significant discoveries because many family stories weren’t passed along to her.

“FOREVER®’s genealogy services have uncovered stories I didn’t know about. My dad died in a car accident when I was 12. He was 34 and his only sister died before he did.”

On her mother’s side, there were also gaps to fill in.

“My mom’s brother, my uncle, was in the OSS, the forerunner of the CIA. On my father’s side, an uncle joined the army as a private and retired as a Lt. Colonel. During World War II, he was a prisoner of war in Germany who got rescued with several other prisoners but before they reached allied lines, they were captured again.”

After the war, he became a member of an acapella quartet.

FOREVER®’s Family Research Breakthrough

FOREVER® researchers were tracking the history of Rori’s great-great-grandfather who had moved from Chicago to southern Illinois. But they ran into a roadblock. He was originally from Germany and all of his naturalization records were in Chicago, but the documents had been destroyed in the great Chicago fire of 1871.

His death record had a number on it, but not the names of his parents. In Germany, there are family books and the researchers had his mother-in-law’s and father-in-law’s names and they used that information to locate her great-great-grandfather’s lineage.

They went the extra mile.

Rori had the records searched back to 1598 in Germany and learned about ancestors who were politicians and merchants. She was surprised to learn about their longevity.

“I discovered family in the 1700s and 1800s who lived into their 80s and early 90s. People lived longer than current generations. My mother died at 73 and a lot of her family members died in their late 60s and late 70s. When I hit 70, I thought about what else do I want to do with my life?”

FOREVER® is Versatile

Your family history isn’t just about saving stories from the past. You’re leaving a legacy for future generations.

The photos, videos, and documents you collect during 2024 and in the years to come will one day be seen as historical records of how you celebrated holidays, took vacations, and lived every day.

FOREVER® is the most trusted cloud storage platform of its kind but you can turn digital files into printed photo books and gifts like wall art and more.

Rori enjoys helping other families use FOREVER® to chronicle their stories and provide a meaningful legacy for the future.
